Why is Dr. Oz being sued?

Celebrity doctor Mehmet Oz landed in hot water again this week in the wake of a May 12th segment of The Dr. Oz Show on extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) entitled, “Is Your Olive Oil Fake?” Now, the North American Olive Oil Association (NAOOA), a not-for-profit trade association representing marketers, packagers and importers of olive oil, is suing Dr. Oz for false attacks in a lawsuit filed on Tuesday.

Making exaggerated or downright false claims is nothing new for Oz. In December of 2014, 10 doctors from prestigious institutions sent a scathing letter calling for Columbia University to oust the television doctor from his position as vice chair of the Department of Surgery, saying that Oz misleads and endangers the public. Over 1000 doctors agreed with the sentiment according to a survey conducted by SERMO, a leading social network for doctors. In June of that same year, Oz landed in the hot seat at a senate hearing, where Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) thoroughly blasted him about evidence-scarce claims about “miracle” and “magic” weight loss supplements.
